The summer is finally here (again)! While the pollen count might be at moderately steady levels, runny eyes, itchy throat and blocked nose can still put a damper on that summer glow. And it doesn’t have to be just the pollen… Whilst medication can alleviate the symptoms, which is helpful when you’re out and about, there are also a few simple ways to reduce and control those allergy triggers in your home.
According to research conducted by Allergy UK, common allergens, such as house dust mites, pets and, to a lesser extent, pollen, are found in most homes in the UK. They have more of an impact on the lives of allergy sufferers than previously realised.
A study found that 41% of allergy sufferers avoid visiting a relative or friend's house because they're scared that being in their home may trigger allergic symptoms.
We found a few tips that you and your friends and family can do to ensure that you feel allergy-free, comfortable and relaxed in your own and their homes.
Pet allergens from cat and dog hair can inflame allergies. Children with pet allergies can miss out on visits to friends, sleepovers and parties where there are animals present.
Try limit pets to areas with hard or easy-to-wipe surfaces. Keep them out of your bedrooms and, if at all possible, out of your living room. Of course, you may not entirely prevent your pets from entering your living space and, after all, they are part of your family, in which case consider investing in a pet vacuum cleaner, which is specifically designed to tackle cleaning challenges that come with owning pets. Brush your pets’ coats regularly and give them a wash once or twice a week.
Dust Mites and Moulds
As well as pet dander, the most common indoor allergens in UK homes are house dust mites and moulds. House dust mite allergen is most associated with bedrooms, but it can settle on surfaces and spread around the house.
Dusting hard surfaces and fabric furniture with a damp cloth regularly will help eliminate dust in spots where you probably spend most of your time. Vacuum hard floors and carpets daily, if possible, and your furniture twice a week (and don’t forget your bed!). Get some dust mite covers for your mattress, pillows and duvet so that you can rest easy. Air your house regularly to prevent appearance of moulds. You may also want to consider investing in a steam cleaner to make sure that all your hard and soft surfaces are allergen-free.
Allergens from outside such as pollen particles and pet hair can infiltrate the home through the air, especially during summer, and through open doors and windows. But they also make their way inside by sticking to clothes, skin and hair. Once inside the home, they circulate in the air and settle on soft furnishings and hard surfaces. They may cause problems for anyone with hay fever or asthma.
Keep pollen out of your home by keeping your windows closed. Be aware that you can bring pollen in from the outside if it sticks to your clothes and hair. So change your clothes the moment you get in and put them in a plastic bag until you are ready to do your laundry, have a shower and wash your hair. Wipe down pets when they come in after playing outside.
Washing your carpets on a regular basis will also reduce the risk of triggering allergic symptoms. We recommend pet owners and allergy sufferers to wash their carpets and upholstery 2-3 times a year. Also, try using Allergen carpet and upholstery shampoo to remove embedded allergens.
